Tale
A farming family in Montana faces others encroaching on their land. Forry J. Smith, who plays Lloyd, is experienced in the world of Rodeo. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget”; his Montanan accent and reverts to the SoCal speaking voice he usually uses.
It’s a far-fetched affair that straddles the seams between law and justice, family and friendship
Kevin Costner is the patriarch who runs a dynastic ranch the size of a few countries. His lifestyle is influenced by resort developers, tribal law, and the authority of the state of Montana. Reminiscent of Rock Hudson in the movie “Giant”, he tries to stick to the old ways. “Yellowstone” develops quickly with little introduction, yet its story unfolds at the natural pace of a desert day, sticking to tribal rituals, cowboy conventions, and political machinations.
Land and family are his life force
Costner seems a natural to fill his character’s boots. He is a world-weary man who has seen too much and lied too often. He can hear footsteps coming his way, but he can only fulfill his role out of habit as much as loyalty. Although some of the actions are a little confusing due to the lack of explanation, it feels natural, as if the viewer is getting a real slice of life, a glimpse into another world.
I raise my grade to "9"
I hope the resolution to this saga includes an emotional payoff that justifies its breadth and attention to detail. Update 7/20/18: After four episodes, this episode has a strong voice and a steady beat. We learn the entirety of each story, from root to fruit. New season of "Silo" is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
